Hamlet

Directed by Susanna Wilson

July 12 – August 16, 2008

“There’s a divinity that shapes our ends.”

In Denmark, the old Norse gods are being relegated to the realm of mythology as Christianity becomes a way of life. When Hamlet’s father, the King, dies, and his mother remarries the King’s brother, thoughts of revenge, lust, ambition, and murder intertwine with questions of death itself. New concepts of Divine Providence and life after death are something only Prince Hamlet dares to explore. Shakespeare’s masterful play presents an engaging story examining humanity’s innermost thoughts and beliefs.

Hamlet - Sunday, August 10

I attended Hamlet in Magnusson Park yesterday afternoon. Although I am familiar with the play, I was moved to tears by the conclusion of the last scene of the play. I was surprised at how deeply I was moved. Shawn Law truly portrayed the tortured Hamlet. Macall Gordon played a sympathetic Gertrude. Beth Cooper was excellent as Horatio; she nearly made a female Horatio seem plausable. Carolyn M. Monroe was good as Ophelia. The fight scene was well choreographed. However, Patrick Allcorn somehow managed to cut his finger. Please, gentleman, be careful with those weapons! ( A good performance was given by Patrick Allcorn as Laertes as well.) I commend Susanna Wilson on her apparently excellent directing. Bravo!
