Since 1989 GreenStage has produced over half of the plays in Shakespeare’s canon. GreenStage is dedicated to making theater available and accessible to everyone. Each summer our shows reach over 6,000 people with the shared interest of seeing Shakespeare performed outdoors in a straightforward, uncluttered and FREE performance!

The company has also produced other classical plays, brought original scripts to the Seattle Fringe Theater Festival, and in 2001 began a project of producing an American Classic play every winter.

In producing plays, GreenStage’s goal is to focus on story and characters, capturing the life and truth in the plays and sharing it with the audience. As Seattle’s Shakespeare in the Park Company, and Seattle’s longest running Shakespeare company, GreenStage is committed to presenting quality productions of classical theater in a manner that is available to all. In order to reach the largest audience possible, GreenStage’s performances are presented free of charge. The company relies on voluntary donations from contributors and the of generous support of park departments, arts organizations and businesses.

GreenStage's FREE Shakespeare in the Park program consists of two plays by Shakespeare running in repertory in and around Seattle. We bring these shows to major parks in the city of Seattle as well as fairs and parks in surrounding areas.

GreenStage's park program is sponsored by the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation through Sand Point Magnuson Park.

What to bring to our outdoor shows, and what happens if it rains
  • Bring a blanket or a chair. We do ask that audience members with chairs sit towards the back so as not to block the view of those on the ground.
  • Bring a picnic lunch, dinner, or snack. We might even take your leftovers for you.
  • Be prepared for the weather. Sunblock for hot days, jackets or blankets for the cool evenings. Umbrellas or rain gear for rain shows. If you use an umbrella, please be considerate of those around you.
  • In case of rain, we are usually still able to perform. Our general rule is that if an audience is willing to sit in the rain, we are willing to give them a show. This of course depends on just how wet it gets, and how much of an audience there is. We will cancel the show in the case of lightning.
the rime of the outdoor actor - by David Dodge
There is an outdoor actor
And he stoppeth one of three;
By thy rain soaked head
And thy bug bit ass,
Now wherefore stops’t thou me?

He pushed me down onto the grass,
And he moved his lips to speak;
He said the name of "GreenStage"
and my heart grew cold and weak.

He said he’d acted Shakespeare,
All summer in a park:
Undressing in the bushes!
Rehearsing in the dark!

He said it drove him crazy,
That he’d had just too much fun;
And then he said he’d like to buy a
An anti-aircraft gun.
He looked at me- I looked at him,
He said," Show’s over, sonny!"
And then he raised his weathered hand
and asked me for some money.

I said, "No way! Get lost! You suck!"
And he began to cry;
So as I left I gave him some,
I’ll never know just why.

And as I turned away from him,
He shouted in a rage;
"You haven’t heard the last
of this thing that they call: GreenStage!

(with apologies to Samuel Taylor Coleridge)
